vnStat is a console-based network traffic monitor for Linux and BSD that keeps a log of network traffic for the selected interface(s), it uses the network interface statistics provided by the kernel as information source. This means that vnStat won't actually be sniffing any traffic and also ensures light use of system resources.

To install vnstat, run the following command in macOS terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal)
sudo port install vnstat
To see what files were installed by vnstat, run:
port contents vnstat
To later upgrade vnstat, run:
sudo port selfupdate && sudo port upgrade vnstat
Reporting an issue on MacPorts Trac
The MacPorts Project uses a system called Trac to file tickets to report bugs and enhancement requests.
Though anyone may search Trac for tickets, you must have a GitHub account in order to login to Trac to create tickets.
