It can perform protocol analysis, content searching/matching and can be used to detect a variety of attacks and probes, such as buffer overflows, stealth port scans, CGI attacks, SMB probes, OS fingerprinting attempts, and much more.

To install snort, run the following command in macOS terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal)
sudo port install snort
To see what files were installed by snort, run:
port contents snort
To later upgrade snort, run:
sudo port selfupdate && sudo port upgrade snort
Reporting an issue on MacPorts Trac
The MacPorts Project uses a system called Trac to file tickets to report bugs and enhancement requests.
Though anyone may search Trac for tickets, you must have a GitHub account in order to login to Trac to create tickets.
