Axel does the same thing any other accelerator does: it opens more than one HTTP/FTP connection per download and each connection transfers its own, separate, part of the file. It may sound weird, but it works very well in practice.

To install axel, run the following command in macOS terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal)
sudo port install axel
To see what files were installed by axel, run:
port contents axel
To later upgrade axel, run:
sudo port selfupdate && sudo port upgrade axel
Reporting an issue on MacPorts Trac
The MacPorts Project uses a system called Trac to file tickets to report bugs and enhancement requests.
Though anyone may search Trac for tickets, you must have a GitHub account in order to login to Trac to create tickets.
