Each Makefile.am is basically a series of make variable definitions, with rules being thrown in occasionally. The generated Makefile.in files are compliant with the GNU Makefile standards. To install automake17, run the following command in macOS terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal)
sudo port install automake17
To see what files were installed by automake17, run:
port contents automake17
To later upgrade automake17, run:
sudo port selfupdate && sudo port upgrade automake17
Reporting an issue on MacPorts Trac
The MacPorts Project uses a system called Trac to file tickets to report bugs and enhancement requests.
