Automake is a tool for automatically generating Makefile.in files from files called Makefile.am. Each Makefile.am is basically a series of make variable definitions, with rules being thrown in occasionally. The generated Makefile.in files are compliant with the GNU Makefile standards.

To install automake, run the following command in macOS terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal)
sudo port install automake
To see what files were installed by automake, run:
port contents automake
To later upgrade automake, run:
sudo port selfupdate && sudo port upgrade automake
Reporting an issue on MacPorts Trac
The MacPorts Project uses a system called Trac to file tickets to report bugs and enhancement requests.
Though anyone may search Trac for tickets, you must have a GitHub account in order to login to Trac to create tickets.
